Critics of genetically modified organisms or GMOs claim that they pose health risks to the public. Jimmy is always interested in people who have strong opinions, so we sent a crew to one of our local farmers markets to ask people why they avoid GMOs and, more specifically, what the letters GMO stand for.

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, have had their DNA artificially modified by humans, using modern genetic manipulation techniques. By changing the DNA, so changing the genome of an organism, means we can change its characteristics. Humans have been artificially altering the genomes of plants and animals for thousands of years, by selective breeding.

Why are GMOs bad? They aren’t. They just aren’t, not intrinsically, and certainly not for your health. We’ve been eating them for decades with no ill effects, which makes sense, because a genetically modified organism is simply an organism, like every other organism, produces hundreds of thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen specifically by humans.

Let's talk about GMO foods and identify some foods you may not have realized are actually GMO.
Some food manufacturing companies are putting a new term on their labels, "bioengineered food ingredients."
The definition of bioengineered food ingredients:
"Food that contains detectable genetic material that has been modified through certain lab techniques that cannot be created through conventional breeding or found in nature."
Certain companies were concerned that their products would be labeled as GMO and that people would avoid them. So, they decided to develop a new term, "bioengineered food ingredients," and gave it branding to make it appear healthy.
"Bioengineered food ingredients" is essentially another name for GMO. But, this new term now allows companies to bypass the GMO labeling problem they were having.
On top of that, once a product has been highly processed, the traces of GMO become undetectable, and the company no longer has to add the label stating it contains bioengineered food ingredients.
They also don't necessarily have to use the term "bioengineered food ingredients." Instead, they can use a QR code or a number to text or call to get more information.

6. Certain apples
7. Salmon (unless labeled as "wild-caught")

In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the real problem with GMO food, also known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Specifically, we look at whether GMOs and GMO foods are actually bad both for the environment and for your health. GMOs and genetically modified food like soybeans or corn have long raised the ire of non-GMO food activists because they are supposedly frankenfood that will poison us, as a result, they embrace organic foods. GMO advocates champion genetically modified food as a way to combat climate change, solve environmental issues, and solve world hunger. There are truths and fallacies both of the extremes of the GMO debate, but the reality is, and really the core problem with GMOs is not the technology or the genetically modified food itself, but what GMOs and genetically modified foods are used and controlled. Monsanto's BT and HT crops are a perfect example of how GMO foods are used to create monopolies of environmental destruction.
