I share a patient's experience waking up in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) in pain. Two different nurses react to the patient's pain, one normalizing it by claiming it's only pressure, while the other claims the pain is all in the patient's head, ultimately gaslighting them. Which of these approaches is worse? Let's explore the concepts of gaslighting and normalizing, their impact on patients, and the potential dangers they pose in healthcare.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation that can cause a person to question their sanity. This behavior is often seen in situations where conditions aren't immediately obvious to the eye or on lab tests, such as depression, pain, anxiety, or migraines. Gaslighting may come from a lazy nurse, an uninterested caregiver, or a bored friend, who abuse the mind-body connection to their benefit.

Normalizing, on the other hand, is the manipulation and desensitization of attitudes to accept controversial behaviors, either by accepting or justifying them as normal. Some well-accepted examples include grieving, crying, emotional understanding, meditation, and self-care. However, less well-accepted examples include cheating, suffering, and mental health conditions. Although normalization can help reduce stigma around misinformed values and perspectives, especially in mental health, it can also be a form of abuse from people trying to take advantage of you, such as a conspirator, someone with an agenda, or someone trying to coerce you into doing something that doesn't feel right.

Both gaslighting and normalizing are extremes of otherwise powerful and empowering concepts. However, normalization may be more harmful, particularly for your mental health. Deviant behaviors can become "normal" or "healthy" when taken to the extreme, leading to serious mental health issues like PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), or addiction.

It's important to note that these behaviors often come from people in positions of power or trust. Recognizing and addressing gaslighting or normalization in healthcare can help improve patient care and support individuals in their recovery journey.

Learn to recognize the signs of these behaviors and how to respond when faced with them, either as a patient or a healthcare professional. Understanding the dangers of these practices is the first step in fostering a more compassionate and empathetic healthcare environment.

Gaslighting o hacer "luz de gas": Es una forma de abuso psicológico, en el que se manipula y modifica la percepción de la realidad que posee la persona, haciéndole creer la persona, que sus recuerdos y percepciones, son producto de su imaginación; esto se logra a través de crueles manipulaciones psicológicas, como: la negación persistente, las malas direcciones, lasvcontradicciones, las mentiras... Con el gaslighting se busca desestabilizar y deslegitimar a la persona, haciéndola dudar de su cordura.
El término proviene de la película "Gas Light", donde un esposo intenta enloquecer a su esposa, haciéndole creer que no recuerda bien las cosas, mediante alteraciones de la realidad y reajustes de los niveles de las luces de las lámparas de gas...

Los Narcisistas pueden ser, tanto de género masculino como de género femenino.

Narcisista: Trastorno de personalidad, donde la persona tienen un sentido desmesurado de su propia importancia, una necesidad profunda de atención excesiva y admiración; sus relaciones son conflictivas, no escuchan a la otra persona, porque no les importa, tienen una profunda carencia de empatía por los demás, y son incapaces de comprender a la otra persona, o, de tener reales sentimientos por ella. Son adictos a ejercer el control sobre las personas, y las manipulan para conseguirlo. En el fondo son personas inseguras y con su conducta se aseguran que nadie pueda desvelar su inseguridad y su falta de autoestima. Utilizan a sus víctimas como marionetas para que resuelvan sus situaciones de vida y extraen de ella sus recursos. Aunque se muestran encantadores y muy carismáticos, son fríos y egoístas...

Los rasgos del Trastorno de Personalidad Narcisista:
Egocentrismo extremo, dependencia de la admiración de los otros, fantasías de éxito y de grandiosidad...
Envidian y devalúan a los otros, son avaros, explotan a las otras personas, carecen de empatía con los demás (Empatía: Capacidad de entender y compartir los sentimientos y las experiencias de las demás personas. Es imaginarte a ti mismo en los zapatos de la otra persona. Sentir lo que siente el otro, y ver el mundo desde su punto de vista), sus emociones y sentimientos son superficiales, se les dificulta comprometerse realmente y son irresponsables afectivamente en sus relaciones, no tienen en consideración a las demás personas, fingen no comprenderlas y las devalúan, sin experimentar sentimientos de culpa o remordimientos; además suelen presentar promiscuidad en sus relaciones...
No experimentan tristeza, duelo, vergüenza miedo; sus valores tienen una calidad infantil (dominados por el superyó), cumplen las normas para evitar ser castigados.
Experimentan una sensación de vacío y aburrimiento crónico, por lo que requieren de estimulación artificial: salir, ver películas con contenido violento o de miedo, consumo de sustancias y bebidas alcohólicas, jugar con las emociones ajenas (causar en la otra persona miedo, ansiedad, inseguridad, confusión, tristeza, celos... agotar y robar la paz, la felicidad, la luz o el brillo...)

Le gaslighting, c'est LA forme de manipulation mentale la plus dangereuse, car si vous n'êtes pas « instruits », si je peux dire, à la repérer, alors vous ne la voyez venir que lorsqu'il est trop tard. Le manipulateur a déjà détruit votre structure mentale, ne laissant dans votre esprit que des doutes, des peurs, de la culpabilité, et des questionnements obsessionnels. Et en plus, le manipulateur a besoin d'être assez... proche de vous pour l'opérer. Donc, c'est souvent un membre de votre entourage qui vous détruit à petit feu sans même que vous ne le soupçonniez, et pourtant, ça se passe juste là, sous vos yeux...
