5 Things to Do If Someone is Gaslighting You / Here are 5 things to do if someone is gaslighting you. First, identify the problem and call it what it is: you're being gaslighted. Second, understand that you can't control or change the other person. Third, focus on changing yourself and your reactions to them. Next, start focusing on people, places and things where you feel ease and happiness. This will help your brain think better and feel better, so you can have better reactions. Lastly, take responsibility not to get pulled in anymore. That could mean going into therapy, having a mantra you always repeat when you feel triggered by them, working on your self-esteem, or working on your self-compassion. You have to take responsibility. Remember, you can change you, but you can't change them.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that uses manipulation and minimization to make someone question their reality.

As a child growing up with a narcissistic stepfather, I lived in a constant fog of gaslighting.

Eventually, this led to self-gaslighting: I internalized the abuse (and lack of protection from it) and began to gaslight myself. “It wasn’t that bad. I may have been reading into it. Other people have had it much worse…”

I lived in this confusion for decades, and it blocked me from real healing.

If we minimize the abuse, we minimize its impact.

If we minimize the impact, we are deprived of an opportunity to recover.

No matter what anyone else says, I hope you might lean into self-trust today. Listen to your story. Listen to your body. Be a witness to what you are holding.
