This video reviews why humans modify crops. Many of these reasons are similar to what they were thousands of years ago, like preventing crop loss from pest and weather damage or growing more food on less land. Today, with genetic engineering, scientists can change and improve crops more easily and quickly.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched Feed Your Mind, the Agricultural Biotechnology Education and Outreach Initiative, to help consumers better understand genetically engineered foods, commonly called GMOs or genetically modified organisms.
For more information, visit: www.fda.gov/feedyourmind.
Genetically modifying plants and animals is complicated business, but some scientists think this tool could be used to save lives in a variety of ways.

Much of the focus on reducing global warming has been on cutting fossil fuel consumption.
But scientists in California are working on genetically-modifying plants to help soak up greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.
If successful, it could be an important step in slowing global warming.

Due to misreporting and conflicting information, the safety of GMO crops and foods can be a topic of confusion for many. To sort fact from fiction and address GMO safety concerns once and for all, we spoke to registered dietician and GMO Answers volunteer expert Connie Diekman.
Watch her explain the truth about foods that contain GMO and why we shouldn’t fear them.

You know, as a registered dietitian, I often hear people worry about the safety of GMOs and I think one of the things we can comfortably tell them is that the body of scientific evidence proves they are safe. The National Academies of Science even came out last year with a very significant report that looked GMOs, all of the evidence as it related to their safety in our food supply, and they said: GMOs are safe for animals and humans to consume.
Would you each fish that was genetically designed in a lab? What if it was your only option? Like it or not, GMO salmon and other futuristic foods are revolutionizing the global food system right in front of our eyes.
Correction: to enable the salmon to grow larger, Aquabounty injected growth hormone gene from chinook salmon and a promoter sequence from an antifreeze protein gene from ocean pout. The promoter sequence (a fragment of DNA) acts like an on-switch for the chinook gene so that growth hormone is produced year-round instead of just seasonally (spring and summer).
